Jiangnan Shipbuilding and CSSC, jointly signed a contract with Eastern Pacific Shipping to build four Very Large Ammonia Carriers

news-details

Jiangnan Shipbuilding and CSSC, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, jointly signed a contract with Singaporean shipping company EPS (Eastern Pacific Shipping) to build four Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs) with a capacity of 93,000 cubic meters. ceremony. This ship type is currently the largest liquid ammonia carrier in the world. It is not only the preferred ship type for long-distance transportation of green ammonia, but also can be fully loaded with liquefied petroleum gases such as propane and butane.

The main ship type for zero-carbon green ammonia transportation

The 93,000 cubic meter VLAC is a derivative ship (Panda 93A) of the fourth-generation VLGC boutique ship model independently developed and designed by Jiangnan Shipbuilding. This type of ship has an overall length of 230.0 meters, a molded breadth of 36.6 meters, a molded depth of 22.5 meters, and a structural draft of 13.0 meters. It is classified by Lloyd's Register of Shipping. In the design of this type of ship, considering that the density of anhydrous liquid ammonia is higher than that of conventional liquefied petroleum gas, the design of the liquid tank has been specially strengthened. It can have excellent and balanced performance under the conditions of liquid cargo loading and different specific gravity.

Green ammonia is considered to be one of the most promising alternative fuels to achieve the goal of zero-carbon shipping. As a zero-carbon energy source, ammonia fuel can meet more stringent greenhouse gas emission requirements and enable ships to meet the ultimate emission reduction goal in 2050. As the demand for ammonia fuel is expected to expand, the demand for long-distance transport ships with stable supply of liquid ammonia will also continue to increase. As an active advocate and leader of "zero" carbon emissions, Jiangnan Shipbuilding has been proactively cooperating with major partners in the industry Cooperation to actively promote the development of liquefied gas carriers with "zero" carbon emission characteristics.

With the successful undertaking of the 4 VLACs this time, Jiangnan Shipbuilding currently has a total of 52 VLGC orders, 17 in hand, and a global market share of 23.0% in the field of VLGC ships, leading the world VLGC market.

VLGC: Very Large Gas Carrier. Refers to the ultra-large fully-cooled liquefied gas carrier specially used for the transportation of liquefied petroleum gas. It adopts the Type A liquid cargo tank stipulated in the "International Bulk Liquefied Gas Code" (IGC) promulgated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the tolerance is as low as -55° C is made of low temperature steel, and the outer panel of the liquid tank is sprayed with a certain thickness of polyurethane foam material as a heat insulation layer. VLGC can carry liquefied petroleum gas such as propane and butane, but usually does not carry anhydrous liquid ammonia with a large proportion. The VLAC signed this time refers to a very large liquefied gas carrier that is optimized and upgraded on the basis of VLGC so that it can ship anhydrous liquid ammonia, and is also included in the VLGC category.
